Some months ago, FGC hired a new CPA firm. In a few days, co-op members will receive the annual letter containing your proportionate member share of mortgage interest. If you itemize your deductions you will want to bring the letter with you and present it to your tax preparer. A word of caution — the CPA firm’s address and phone number are not included in the letter. Your tax preparer will likely ask you for that information, so bring it with you.

On Wednesday, February 5, 2014, the Ward 4 Democrats are hosting a straw poll vote from 6:30–8:30 PM at Paul Public Charter School. Simultaneously, from 7:00-8:00 PM the Democratic Mayoral Candidates Forum will take place there also. WUSA Channel 9’s Bruce Johnson will be the forum moderator.
A straw poll is an unofficial process to determine the relative strength of candidates and their opponents. In the straw poll that occurred two weeks ago in Ward 8, Councilmember Muriel Bowser defeated current Mayor Vince Gray. Some people feel that straw polls are meaningless and offer no indication of how many people will actually vote for a particular candidate during the actual election, while others think it is a good barometer for determining who will win.
Brandon Todd contacted me on Monday and invited FGC members to attend Wednesday’s event and support our council member.

The Fitness Factory opened last week on Georgia Avenue. How nice to have a business open in the community that is not another liquor store or fast food joint. The gym’s owner is an experienced and committed professional who takes time to learn the needs of clients and helps them achieve their goals.
The Fitness Factory has a range of training equipment, from free weights to machines that enable you to do leg presses, lat pull downs, triceps push up, and more. The hours of operation during the week are 6 AM to 9 PM. The facility is also open on weekends. The membership fee and monthly rates are reasonable and if the number of people I have seen coming in — either to join the gym, work out, or just inquire about the activities — is any indication, then The Fitness Factory will prove to be a neighborhood bonanza. Personal training, cardio, abs and toning instruction, kick boxing, yoga, and boot camp are just some of the activities currently being offered or that will be available at The Fitness Factory in the near future. Upon completion of the lower level, there will be two floors of gym activities featuring everything you need to work out, lose weight, or just get toned.
By the way, guess who stopped by the gym this morning while I was on the treadmill. I said guess. Times up. No clue? Then, I’ll tell you. Looking spiffy in her black with a red stripe warm-up suit was our own Councilmember Muriel Bowser.
With the opening of The Fitness Factory and Walmart – the latter scheduled to open near the end of this year – it is obvious that our sleepy Brightwood neighborhood is changing.
